This image is centered on the south central portion of Monoceros, which means we are looking along the galactic equator in the area north of Sirius. The main object in this field is M50, and north of it we see six additional open clusters. The contrasts are striking ~ in some cases such as NGC 2301, we see a splashy cluster dominated by relatively few bright stars, while in other cases such as NGC 2311, the stars are relatively dim but more numerous and located near the nebula Sharpless 2-287. Another example of this style of cluster is NGC 2286. This area is definitely worth scanning with large binoculars or small telescope. Unannotated image. |
