From a location on the inland shore of the Pamlico Sound, I acquired this image of the nebulosity near μ Cephei, IC 1396.  This nebulosity is marked by multiple dark nebulae that snake through the reddish clouds of ionized hydrogen; these dark nebulae are globules of material that are blocked from illumination by the plasma fields around the larger young stars embedded in the cluster at the center.  The site on the Pamlico Sound is one of the darkest sky locations on the east coast that is accessible by cars (although it entailed driving over a mile on a rough dirt road LOL).  Unannotated image.
