In August of 1993, I bought a used 55mm f/1.2 Nikkor lens at a camera shop in Boulder, Colorado and of course tried it out for some wide-field astro- photography. This shot shows the northern summer Milky Way in Cygnus along with the adjoining constellation of Lyra ~ this was probably a 20 minute exposure to capture the red colors of the North America and Pelican Nebulas, along with the complex region around Sadr in the center of the Northern Cross. Using the lens wide open also unfortunately resulted in the bloated stars. Unannotated image, Back |
Hover over the above image to see a much better
edited version of the scanned photo. I decided
to try editing the scanned .jpg using the Nikon
capture and image manipulation software used to
process NEF raw files.
Being a little more subtle in processing sharp-
ness and contrast, in addition to adjusting the
blue color channel, highlights the large swaths
of red nebulosity in the vicinity of Sadr, also
known as γ Cygni.
