2001 Mars Opposition in Scorpius

Mars came to opposition in the area of Scorpius in June 2001, which was its best opposition in terms of size and brightness since 1988, being somewhat better than the November 1990 opposition in Taurus.  The opposition point was actually in the constellation Ophiuchus, and in this picture we see Mars spending its last day in that constellation before moving back into Scorpius.  On June 12, 2001, Mars was 20.5" in diameter and shone at magnitude -2.35.  I had good views of it with my 10" f/5 dobsonian and my father's C8 that summer.  The below views were obtained after opposition with a Nikon FE2 and Ektachrome slide film.

I don't remember from where the pictures were taken, but I'm sure it was a bit light polluted, hence the green cast to the sky!
