| Jupiter and Venus continue to separate, owing to Venus' rapid eastward movement along the ecliptic. This morning, Venus has just moved from Gemini into Cancer, in which it will reside for much of September. Our image, acquired from central Virginia near Fredericksburg, was made with a 43 mm lens in order to more fully show the scene from horizon up to the position of Jupiter, which is no longer possible with my usual 55 mm lens. Venus is magnitude -3.96 and Jupiter is -2.00, with a separation of 11°59'24". Note that Venus is now just barely below the ecliptic, meaning it is approaching its ascending node. |
