NGC 2986 is located in the rather barren area between υ1 Hydrae and Antlia, so star-hopping to it requires care unless for some reason you're familiar with the star patterns here, which I am not LOL.  Once I was in the right area, however, I was able to pick up the galaxy at 76x while sweeping through, without knowing exactly where it was, so that made for a much easier identification than most of the other objects this evening.  It was bright but small, like a hazy or nebulous star; no structure or orientation was detectable.  The observing guide I am using listed it as having magnitude 11.7, with a relatively small size, so the surface brightness must be a good deal higher than my other targets tonight.
