NGC 2196 is on the eastern side of the main pattern of Lepus, in the southerly part of the constellation.  I thought this galaxy was very faint, with a low surface brightness; I could not detect any structure, no core, and averted vision was required to find and hold it in view.  It was so faint that even with careful star-hopping I found it difficult to locate.
