I have never observed this nebula before, so I was again skeptical of my ability to see it from my light-polluted location, however I was able to detect it.  NGC 2023 is located to the east of the wall of red emission nebulosity that serves as the backdrop for the Horsehead Nebula, just south of Alnitak (ζ Orionis).  I was able to detect nebulosity around the star that illuminates the nebula, and when I used a nebula filter, it became more pronounced, so I have confidence that I made a positive identification.  I could not detect any structure, just a featureless glow sort of like in this image (it is the bluish area exactly left of the Horsehead, below and to the right of Alnitak).
