The galaxy NGC 1161 is located just to the west of the middle star in the right leg of Perseus, κ Persei.  It is paired with NGC 1160, but that galaxy is even smaller and fainter than NGC 1161.  From κ go northwest to a pair of stars, then continue due west to a fainter pair, then go straight south to a series of four stars in a zig-zag pattern.  NGC 1161 is right below them, and directly adjacent to a pair of stars.  At first, using 76x, I was not able to see anything, but then at 123x I was able to see a small nebulous patch.  Switching to my 6.7mm UWA yielding 227x, it was much easier to see, and although I could now see it using direct vision, no structure was detectable; at this power, I thought it actually had a higher surface brightness than other galaxies that I had seen.  Maybe I should use this eyepiece for other observations as well.
