NGC 1012 is in the northeastern part of Aries, north of the easternmost star in the main pattern of the ram.  The star-hop to this galaxy is difficult owing to the lack of bright stars in its vicinity, or of any stars with an obvious pattern.  I started at 41 Arietis, then noticed the line of 33, 35, and 39 Arietis, and worked my way from 39 over to the west-northwest to the vicinity of the object.
I found this galaxy to be faint, with low surface brightness, and also very small; no core or concentration was detectable, just a faint glow across the small area.  I could not detect any structure or its orientation.
