The first object in Perseus was a galaxy south of M34.  The first issue with this object is that the star-hop is not easy.  See the map for one way to get there; start from M34 (itself not necessarily the easiest starting point!), and go south to a small triangle of stars, from there continue along the same path to an uneven close pair.  NGC 1003 makes an equilateral triangle with the short base of the star triangle and the uneven pair.  Fortunately, once you sweep it up, I thought it was easy to see.  My notes indicate it was faint but not small, with surface brightness that is decent enough that I saw it right away.  I could not detect any structure but possibly an orientation to the faint hazy patch.
