NGC 821 is in the southwestern part of Aries, just across the border from the north-south line of stars marking the eastern fish of Pisces; it is in a rather sparse area so the star-hopping is not the easiest, but the best place to start is at ξ1 Ceti and then head west to a pair of stars, then northwest to another pair, then head back northeast to an equally bright star to the second pair, then on to another equally bright star, and the galaxy is in that vicinity.  I found this object to be fairly apparent but with a low surface brightness; there was no concentration or structure or orientation to my eyes, just a broadly even haze, right next to the field star just like in the reference image in the guide I was using.
